Tickets
You will see on 192 several places that advertise “Discount Tickets”.
These are just “come-ons” to try to get you to take a look at time
share places. You will get the discounted tickets but only after you have sat
through a 90 minute plus sales pitch.
Disney has several kinds of tickets. The type of tickets you purchase should
be based on what you plan to do and how long you plan to stay. And also if
you might be coming back within the same 12 month period. Here is some information
to help you choose:
Single day passes to single parks.
Park Hopper passes in 4, 5, 6 and 7 days. These get you into any of the 4 main
parks and allow you to “hop” from park to park on the same day.
Park Hopper Plus passes add the 3 Disney water parks to your list of thing
to do. The passes to the water parks are usually on top of the main park days.
Annual passes are a good value if you will be spending a lot of time at Disney
now and will be returning within the same 12 months before they expire. They
give you added benefits like free parking and discounts on back stage tours
and discounts on merchandise.
Getting the most from your time at Disney
Food in the parks can be expensive. For a family of 4, a fast food meal of
burgers, fries, drink, etc. can cost $40 or more. Don’t be ashamed
to take your lunch and drinks with you into the parks. You can freeze bottled
water the night before and it will always be cold through the day when you
need the refreshment. Bottled water in the parks runs $2.50 up. If you bring
your own lunch, rent a locker at the front of the park to store it in until
your ready for lunch. Get some can insulators to help keep sodas cold. You
can also get a small insulated lunch box to keep food cold. You can ask for
cups of ice at the parks which is still free. Don’t take glass containers
to the parks.
Seeing it all. It will be difficult if not impossible to see everything at
Disney in a week. One way to increase the things you can get to is to start
early at the back of the park and work your way forward. There will be less
congestion that way and consequently you’ll see and do more things. This
plan doesn’t work at Epcot because “World Showcase” doesn’t
open till approximately 11 AM.
Sun screen. Don’t forget to use sunscreen!!! Don’t get so busy
that you forget to put it on. If you get burnt you won’t have much fun
after that.
“ Mist” coolers are little bottles with fans attached to them that
you use to “mist” yourself to keep cool. Buy them before you go into
the parks. You’ll save 50% or more.
Some things we’ve noticed: Wednesdays seem to be the least congested
in the parks. Mondays and Tuesdays seem to be the most congested. If I had
to make a guess I would say that most people go full force at the beginning
of the week and by Wednesday they are too tired to go again so it becomes a
recuperation day. On more than one occasion we have gone to Sea World on Wednesday
and have had almost no lines anywhere. Even “Krachen”, a really
great roller coaster, was “get off the ride and get right back on.” The
point is, if you are going to sit out a day from the parks, don’t make
it Wednesday.
Disney Water Parks - on hot days everyone wants to go to the water parks. Problem
is that Disney limits the number of guests in the water parks and when that
number is reached they close the park to additional guests. If you want to
go to a Disney Water Park on a hot day then plan to go early.
Animal Kingdom—go early in the day (at the time the park opens). The
animals are the most active in the morning and tend to sleep during the heat
of the day. Get your “Fast Pass” for the River Rapids ride so you
can do that during the heat of the day. It will feel good to cool off.
For guests with disabilities—over the past several years Disney has changed
it’s policies toward handling of guests with disabilities. Although Disney
is still accommodating, there are many changes. If you think that renting a
wheelchair for a day will get you through the lines faster or get you preferred
treatment, think again. Because of abuse from people doing just that Disney
is much more careful about “special” guest handling. A couple of
things that will help if you or your family member has special needs are as
follows: Disney does have special passes that will allow guests with special
needs to access some rides faster but you have to qualify for it and Disney
won’t tell you that they are available. In order to qualify for special
assistance passes you must be: 1-wheelchair bound (pretty much unable to transfer),
2-have a disability that makes you unable to tolerate long waits. Some of Disney’s
staff have been trained to recognize these guests. Many have not been trained
and you will need the special pass to get proper service. The bottom line is
that unless your disability is pretty severe, you won’t get special treatment.
If you feel you qualify for a special pass, then go to Guest Services when
you enter the park. Explain the situation to the guest relations person and
ask for an appropriate pass. In the past Disney had 3 levels of passes. Blue—offers
no different level of assistance than any other guest. Yellow—offers
reduced wait times and access to special entrances when available. Red—gets
you to the front of the line in almost all cases. At present there is only
one type of pass but that could change. These passes are based on level of
disability and Disney won’t volunteer them to you. Also, in order to
get the correct pass you will need to get it from the Magic Kingdom because
it is the most inaccessible of all the parks. The other parks don’t offer
special passes for the most part because they are more accessible. But if you
get the correct one from Magic Kingdom, it will help you in all the other parks.
If you aren’t disabled please don’t ask for a special pass. Abuse
will only make things more difficult for guests that truly have disabilities
and need special assistance in order to enjoy as much of Disney as possible.
Other Parks and Things to Do
Sea World—Sea World is a great relaxing park. It’s less crowded
than the other parks and has lots to do and see. Adults like it because they
don’t feel so rushed. Kids like it because there are lots of things to
do and experience including 2 great roller coasters. Sea World also has Discovery
Cove. It’s a new park just across the road from Sea World. At Discovery
Cove you can swim with Dolphins and fish of all kinds. This is a “reservations
only” park. You will need to make reservations well in advance to enjoy
this park. The number of guests are limited so the experience is like spending
a relaxing day on a Caribbean Beach.
Universal Studios—has two parks. The original and the new Islands of
Adventure. Lots to see and do here.
Water Mania—another water park located on 192 in Kissimmee.
Wet & Wild—yet another water park off of International Drive.
Arabian Nights—Dinner Theater on 192.
Medieval Times—Dinner Theater on 192 by Wal Mart.
Pirates of the Caribbean—Dinner Theater.
Church Street Station—in Orlando.
NASA—Space Center. This is about an hour away on the east coast.
Golf—if you enjoy golf, don’t forget that the Disney area is a
golf capital of the world with more courses than you can shake a stick at,
and not far from your front door. See the golf section of this guide for course
information and phone numbers.
Plus more, more, more things than I can possibly list here. Be sure to pick
up some tourist information booklets which have more information and coupons.
